gitingest vs contextzip
gitingest turns a GitHub repository into a prompt-friendly text digest, often with nothing to install: change github.com to gitingest.com in the URL. contextzip has the same shortcut (contextzipcli.com/github.com/user/repo), works on GitLab and Bitbucket and on the code on your disk, and writes the AI's changes back.
Feature comparison
| Feature | gitingest | contextzip |
|---|---|---|
| Output | A text digest: a summary, the directory tree and file contents (digest.txt by default) | A ZIP of your real files, with a report and a CONTEXTZIP.md telling the AI how to reply |
| Local, private, uncommitted code | Yes, with the CLI on a local path | Yes. It packages the files on your disk, committed or not. |
| Repo link, no clone | Yes. Swap hub for ingest in a GitHub URL, or use gitingest.com. Private repos with a token (--token). | Yes: GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket links, folders and refs, with no git or clone. Private repos with a token or your gh login. |
| Stack-aware exclusions | Skips files in .gitignore (--include-gitignored turns that off), plus include and exclude patterns | Yes. Detects Node.js, Next.js, Python, Django, FastAPI, Rust, Go and Ruby, including several stacks in one monorepo, and applies each one's rules on top of .gitignore. |
| .env and secrets | Not mentioned in its docs | Secret files (.env, private keys, cloud credentials) are left out by default. A .env you include on purpose keeps its keys, with every value replaced by [REDACTED]. |
| Clipboard as a file | Not in the CLI. It writes a file or prints to stdout. | Yes. The ZIP is copied as a real file, so you paste it straight into an upload box. |
| Applying AI changes back | No. It builds the digest; the way back is up to you. | cz apply-zip puts each file in its real folder (even when the AI flattened the paths), three-way merges around your edits, and asks before anything risky |
| Reply as a pull request | No | cz apply-zip --pr turns the AI's ZIP into a branch and a pull request on GitHub |
| Web UI | gitingest.com | Yes, on the home page: drop a folder (packed in your browser, never uploaded) or paste a repo link. In Chrome and Edge it also applies a reply to your folder. |
| Editor extension | Not mentioned in its docs | Yes: an official VS Code extension that packages and applies replies, with conflicts in the merge editor |
| MCP server | Not mentioned in its docs | Yes (cz mcp), with tools to package and to apply a reply |
| Python API | Yes: from gitingest import ingest, with an async version | Yes: get_files, get_git_changes, create_zip, apply_zip |
| Install | None for the website. pip, pipx, Homebrew, apt or Scoop for the CLI. Python 3.8+. | pip install contextzip (or pipx, uv), or without Python: npm @contextzip/cli, Homebrew, Scoop |
Where contextzip wins: a gitingest alternative for your own code
- The same URL trick, on more hosts.
contextzipcli.com/github.com/user/repoopens the repo ready to package, and the CLI takes GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket links, branch folders and refs. - Your own code, without pushing it. Drop a folder on the home page and it's packed in your browser, never uploaded. The CLI packages private, uncommitted, half-finished work on your disk.
- The AI's edits come back.
cz apply-zipputs each returned file in its real folder, even when the AI flattened the paths, and merges around your own edits. For a GitHub repo,--propens a pull request instead. - Secrets are handled.
.envfiles, private keys and cloud credentials are left out by default, and a.envyou include on purpose is redacted value by value. - Exclusions that know your stack. Lockfiles, build output and caches for your stack are left out even when they aren't in
.gitignore. - Made for upload boxes. The ZIP is copied to your clipboard as a file, so it pastes into Claude or ChatGPT as an attachment with folders intact.
- Agents and editors.
cz mcpgives an AI agent tools to package and apply, and the VS Code extension does both from the editor.
Both are Python tools you can install with pip. If you want the AI's edits back in your code, that's what contextzip is built for.
